What comes to mind when you think of the colour purple? Culturally, hues of purple have always been symbolic of non-conformity and eccentricity. When we think of purple, we think of mystery and enchantment – something that’s almost ethereal. That’s why at Wine & Dine’m Catering we were overjoyed to hear that Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2018 is none other than the beautiful shade of ultra violet. Described by Pantone as a dramatically “provocative and thoughtful purple shade”, ultra violet “communicates originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking”. From food to fashion, décor to drinks, get ready to embrace all things ultra violet this year. For this blog, we chatted to event design and style expert, Sharon Penny, who has given us some great tips and tricks for infusing Pantone’s Colour of the Year into your wedding or special event.
1. ULTRA VIOLET ACCENTS THROUGH DÉCOR
Décor is one of the easiest (and most fun!) ways to show off a colour trend. Think: floral arrangements, standout centre pieces, ornaments and more. Sharon says, “Ultra violet can be introduced to weddings or special events […] through creative lighting, linens, florals and natural elements, such as purple hydrangeas, lavender, Vanda orchids, eggplants and natural amethyst gemstones.” You could also include contemporary wayfinding signage using acrylic shapes in a mix of transparent and opaque purples, or through gorgeous photo backdrops using mineral stone patterns like marble and agate in different purple and violet shades. Ultra violet can evoke many different emotions depending on the materials it’s placed with. For example, paired with metallics, ultra violet becomes luxurious; whereas with greens, greys and neutral shades, it becomes more modest suggesting natural elegance. As versatile as it is memorable, ultra violet is sure to make a statement on your special day.
2. ADD AN ULTRA VIOLET SPLASH TO YOUR FOOD AND DRINKS
For a real crowd pleaser, why not add a splash of ultra violet to your food and drinks menu? One of the easiest ways to do so is to add violets to food fare, or to your cocktails for an elegant and enchanting twist. Feeling more adventurous? Our Executive Chef Lincoln Hoole certainly knows how to bring creativity to the plate. Picture this for a menu your guests won’t forget: king fish with pressed blackberry tuile, fermented red cabbage and a blackberry splash to start, and a pantone cheesecake with a blueberry crusted bar, crème fraiche quenelle and purple splice white chocolate to top it off. Our mouths are salivating at the thought. When it comes to designing your perfect menu, you really can let your imagination run wild. We’re certainly up for the challenge!
3. GO ALL OUT WITH AN ULTRA VIOLET COLOUR THEME
If the colour ultra violet really sets your heart alight, why not go all out with a colour theme. According to Sharon, there are many ways you can style using ultra violet and complementary softer hues of purple, to make a statement at your wedding or special event. Hues of purple pair well with many shades, from last year’s greenery to deep scarlet reds and icy blues. Depending on your personal theme, Sharon recommends darker tones, such as deep burgundy, teals, ruby red and emerald greens in winter, to create a rich and moody ambience. Or for something more soft and summery, accompany ultra violet with lavender tones, shades of dusty pinks and greens. “It really is a versatile hue that can take you in many styling directions by creative exploration and experimentation. It can make a statement in any space, whether it’s one of elegance, tradition, a bold statement or an unexpected contemporary twist”, concludes Sharon.
These are just a few easy ways you can incorporate Pantone’s 2018 Colour of the Year into your wedding day or special event. Make it fun, get creative and simply embrace this provocative and enchanting colour – it’s certainly a special one.
