Engagement party

1. Select your ENGAGEMENT PARTY venue

Setting the atmosphere for your engagement party all comes down to finding the right venue. Our pick for an unmissable engagement party is Baedeker Wine Bar in Fortitude Valley. This heritage listed space was built in 1909 to serve as an inner-city flour mill. While the building’s functionality has changed, the original charm remains in its new lease on life as an events space.

Baedeker offers three unique function spaces to suit your style.

Where else can you make your grand entrance through a revolving bookshelf? The Cellar can hold up to 18 pax at the hand crafted timber table. The Cellar is ideal for a small sit-down dinner celebration with those closest to you.

Celebrate in style in the Garden. Imagine sipping on cocktails (with your left hand obviously!) under the festoon lights. The Garden offers an adjoining outdoor bar, ample seating and a stunning backdrop for photos.

Whether you’re hosting a large sit-down dinner or cocktail soiree, Acland Room can be transformed to suit your style. Acland Room is the largest function space on offer, hosting up to 150 pax.

2. Hire a team of vendors who can bring your ENGAGEMENT PARTY to life

Now you have your venue, it’s time to sort out the details. Hosting an engagement party that wows all comes down to finding vendors who understand your vision. Whether you want to keep things simple and let the space speak for itself or create a dreamy eventscape, having the right team in your corner will make the process simple.

Our 2020 wedding vendor recommendations guide features our favourite suppliers that we have worked with and know that you will love just as much as we do.

Pro tip: Treat your engagement party as a test run for the main event. Work with the suppliers that you think you might like to have for your wedding to build the rapport and develop your vision early.

3. Choose your menu

The key to hosting any milestone event, is providing your guests with a menu they won’t forget. We have teamed up with Baedeker to offer a range of function packages for sit down dinners, cocktail functions and shared dining events. As the exclusive on-site caterers, you can trust that our award-winning menus, combined with Baedeker’s welcoming atmosphere will have your guests talking.

4. Match your wine

Now that you have your menu, it’s time to match your wines. We spoke to Baedeker’s in-house sommelier to get his tips on how to best match your wines.

  1. The season and weather play an important role in selecting the drinks for your event. For Autumn and Winter events, think aromatic Mulled Wine. In Spring and Summer guests are generally looking for something cold and crisp, so Pinot Grigio and a dry rosé from Cotes de Provence in France will fit the bill nicely. For a great all-rounder wine that suits most peoples tastes, look at blends such as GSM’s (Grenache, Mataro, Shiraz).
  • Bubbles!! This can be always be a difficult choice, if you choose to serve Champagne at your event, look for a ‘Blanc de Blanc’. Blanc de Blanc means only white grapes have been used to make the wine. It is not as dry as ‘brut’ champagne or sparkling and is a lot more approachable and enjoyable to drink throughout an event.

Alternatively, why not arrange a complimentary wine tasting with their sommelier to help you select the perfect drop? Baedeker’s sommelier can also assist in supplying you with your favourite wines from your engagement party to your wedding.

5. Enjoy your night

Out of all our top tips for your engagement party this one is the most important.

At the end of the day an engagement party is a chance for you and your partner to celebrate an important milestone in your lives with those who mean the most to you. It can be hard to not let yourselves get caught up in the chaos of guest lists, expanding budgets and trying to recreate what you’ve seen on Instagram until eventually you’re left feeling like maybe you should just elope instead (we’ve all been there!). All that truly matters is that you enjoy the evening so take a moment with your partner to soak it all in.
