Megan is one of Brisbane’s leading cake designers and the talent behind Hansel and Gretel Cakes, a Brisbane based cake decorating business. So when we had the opportunity to provide the catering for Megan and Matt’s wedding we jumped at the chance – and boy were we glad that we did!
Like many couples last year, Megan and Matt’s plans were thwarted by COVID-19, however, these two were determined to go ahead and knew exactly what they wanted.
From custom confetti featuring The Golden Girls (all lovingly cut out by hand) to their magical colourful florals and styling, this wedding was a labour of love incorporating some of the Brisbane’s best wedding suppliers.
What made it the day extra special was that Megan and Matt chose to celebrate in their very own backyard with their dog and a tiny group of family and friends (and all that colour)!
The reception
On the day Megan enlisted the help of Wedding Coordinator Til Death Events and Erin Woodhall Celebrant together with the calming influence of Juddric Photography who captured all the laid back fun.
One long reception table was styled with Megan’s own collection of willow blue plates and ginger jar vases were filled with sweet-smelling jonquils from Mrs Gibbons Flowers. Coupled with Gold Wedding Hire gold and white cutlery and pink and red place cards designed by stationer, September Creative the table was set for an intimate group of Megan and Matt’s family and friends.
The food
Megan’s large commercial cake-making kitchen made is super easy for our team to provide catering in their home. Megan has long been a Wine & Dine’m fan, and despite having to postpone the original wedding date and restrict numbers, she and Matt were keen to create a shared dining experience for their 30 guests to remember.
The menu consisted of:
- Chicken tagine, sumac vegetable, candy orange (gf/df)
- Slow-cooked lamb, orecchiette pasta, rich tomato, parmesan, green salad
- Green beans, orange butter, almonds (v/gf)
- Jarrah pumpkin, tahini yogurt, lemon haloumi (v/gf)
- Green oak, heirloom tomato, cucumber pickle, champagne dressing (v/gf/df)
The day after the wedding Megan wrote: “I loved laying in bed last night eating a second helping of your amazing food, and also eating it for lunch today and now dinner!”
“I have worked in the Brisbane wedding industry for a long time and have had the pleasure of working with you on a professional level. I always knew I wanted you to cater my wedding day.
“The team went over and above for us with their service. The staff were happy, polite yet professional. The food was delicious!
“All our guests commented on how great the food was and how great the staff were. Catering was the only thing we really ‘splurged’ on for our wedding day, and it was one of the best decisions we made.
Thank you to the whole team for making our wedding day such a special memory for us to look back on.”

For dessert, Megan made a selection of home-style pies including pecan, sweet potato, chocolate and banoffee, and let’s not forget that incredible cake!
The cake
Being a wedding cake maker by profession, Megan did feel the pressure to make her own cake extra special. However given the low key wedding, she decided to go with “a cake that just looked yummy and a design that would never go out of style”.
Megan chose three flavours; gluten-free carrot cake with cream cheese icing, chocolate cake with caramel filling and orange cake with passionfruit and raspberry filling. Once assembled, it was smothered it in a pink buttercream and finished with edible flowers and passionfruit grown from my own garden.
The styling and florals
Megan’s favourite colour palette of pink and red influenced all the styling and floral decisions and was the perfect collaboration between the creative talents of Mrs Gibbons Flowers and The Perfect Party Co.
“Amey from The Perfect Party Co is a creative genius,” says Megan. “She painted the chairs and table white for us, as well as surprising me with a custom pink and red bar. She even made red and pink throw cushions especially for us. We would have been lost without her.”
As for flowers, the couple say they were blown away by Amber from Mrs Gibbons Flowers. “Each of our guests commented on how they had never seen flowers like it before,” shares Megan. “Sometimes I want to go back to my wedding day, just so I can relive the flowers.”
And for those of you dying to know, Megan designed her dream skirt with Ginger and Gold and paired it with a simple pink sweater from Trenery and a gold headpiece from Morgan and Taylor.
